"Any idea when you're interviewing Haim?" a message arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only one problem: The sender also wants to be Haim's fourth member. Furthermore, we are far from alone. A host of celebrated admirers have also petitioned for the position.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're multi-time Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a tight-knit unit. Their visuals frequently show them marching in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such unfettered joy you can't help but think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "It is the biggest compliment. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire others to make music."

"So anyone gets an invitation to be the next Haim sister."

Historic Milestone

The band are speaking from a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge achievement," continues Alana. "However we're just grateful for the women that came before us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The project was born from a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that strange transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The themes follow endings and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to actively work on ignoring the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed confidence demanded a fresh approach – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The trio's candor shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their personal horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an global fan base.

But the band will always be their number one priority.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
