Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these treatments should be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
